"Public Enemies" is the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger-the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis, and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.
No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone-from his girlfriend Billie Frechette to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.
But while the adventures of Dillinger's gang-later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson and Alvin Karpis-thrilled many, Hoover hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw's capture as a way to elevate the Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI.
I was offered a part in Public Enemies.
I play a Chicago Police Detective.
The manager of the Biograph Theater thinks the box office is going to be robbed after the last show because 4 men are standing across the street watching the box office. What the men are looking for is a signal from FBI Special Agent Melvin Purvis (played by Christian Bale) that John Dillinger is coming out from the last show. Me and 3 other cops are sent to the Biograph to check them out, or as Director Michael Mann told me, "roust-em" I asked him what he meant by roust-em and he said " you guys are cops, do your thing".
In my scene I was talking to one of the guys when Purvis (Bale) pushes me out of the way to tell my Sgt, that the men are with him and working a case with the FBI. At this point I take exception to him laying hands on me and we have words. That's about all I want to say, you have to see it....The movie will open July 1st 2009.
